From the Orchestra Conductor
Bring the voice of the soil to more people and make them change their perception on soil. As Orchestra Conductor, we put in place the group by finding members from different backgrounds and stakeholhers typology. Now, our goal is to provide the best structure possible to facilitate the discussions and the life of the Soil Orchestra. Since the launch in September, we are working together on the vision of the orchestra to be able to elaborate an action plan around soil & art activities and projects to be created around the SOILSCAPE project and after.
This is an opportunity for AFES to expand network and to show how the work in complementarity can bring even more impact and long-term dynamic.
If your organization is willing to participate and propose your expertise to co-create activities or project, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us as a first step and why not, join us!

Ministère de la Culture – Direction Générale de la Création Artistique DGCA
Heritage research informs the heritage policies developed and implemented by the Ministry of Culture and all heritage institutions. It renews and improves the work of professionals to ensure better management of heritage, particularly in the exercise of the State’s sovereign, legislative and regulatory prerogatives and scientific and technical control.
Ministère de la Culture - Direction Générale de la Création Artistique DGCAUMR Sens
The SENS – Knowledge, Environment, Societies – joint research unit focuses its research on the societal dimension (including social, economic, political and cultural issues) of current environmental dynamics. It brings together researchers, lecturers, engineers, technicians and PhD students from three institutions: CIRAD, IRD and Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 University.
UMR Sens INRAE
An organisation dedicated to knowledge, innovation, expertise and public policy support, with 18 research centres at the heart of regional dynamics and 14 departments that lead multidisciplinary research communities.
INRAEUnilasalle
Polytechnique Institute
We are experts in soils and their biodiversity. We have worked in collaboration with artists:
– Numerous exhibitions at the intersection of art and science hosted at our documentation centre for students and staff.
– Work with a photographer in residence on our campus for one year
– Participation in an art and science exhibition on microbiota during the latest JMICS in Rouen.
– Commitment to continuing to develop initiatives to raise awareness of soil science through art
UnilasalleEcodiv – Univ Rouen Normandie
The ECODIV laboratory is not currently involved in any artistic projects related to soil. However, a recent project funded by the Normandy Region will enable the development of acoustic sensors to monitor the phenology of soil organisms. The project leader, Pierre Ganault, plans to use these recordings to create artistic projects, potentially in collaboration with Daniela Lorini, an artist who has already worked with soil acoustics.
Ecodiv – Univ Rouen NormandieCadusol
I will begin practising as an independent soil scientist at my company CADUSOL in September 2025. One of my motivations for practising independently is precisely the opportunity to promote soil conservation through various channels: soil diagnostics, participatory workshops, technical training, and also artistic projects (music, theatre, photography, and video, which are areas that I am very passionate about).
CadusolPOLAU
POLAU has launched a Living Soil School project with its local partners. The Living Soil School is a learning programme that aims to combine academic and non-academic knowledge, field experience and fictional hypotheses drawn from artistic imagination, with a view to collectively setting the subject of soil in motion. By changing perceptions and representations of particularly technical subjects or issues, it becomes easier to collectively drive regional transitions.
POLAUUMARELL
The Living Soils Lab develops an approach at the intersection of art, soil science and community engagement. Its activities related to artistic practices around soil include:
– Organising exhibitions and participatory workshops that combine scientific reporting, artistic creation and the appropriation of urban spaces.
– Mobilising artists, designers and illustrators to interpret, visualise and make accessible the dynamics, narratives and data of urban soils through installations, visual productions and sensitive cartography.
– The development of sensory journeys and immersive experiences enabling residents and professionals to discover the soil in a different way, through observation, storytelling and collective creation on site.

Charlotte RodonCompagnie Mycélium
The Mycélium company is run by an ecologist and an actress. We write plays that focus on ecological issues, specifically biodiversity. Soil is a subject that is very important to us. In 2021, we created a play, Croûtes célébration terreuse, which questions our relationship with the soil, and we are continuing our work with several ideas and projects in progress.
Compagnie MycéliumPhilippe Lebeaux
Artistic photographs and videos on living soils
Creation of visual work combining a scientific approach and an artistic perspective to highlight the invisible biodiversity of soils. These images, captured at different scales, reveal the richness and complexity of the underground world, often unknown to the general public.
Creation of educational exhibitions
Design and development of travelling exhibitions for educational purposes, aimed at raising awareness among a wide audience of the importance of soil in ecosystems.
Exhibition currently in progress: The Super Powers of Soil – A fun and interactive exhibition to reveal the little-known richness of soil.
Design of educational workshops
Development of an interactive workshop dedicated to discovering soil biodiversity.

Association Fête de la NatureArviva
ARVIVA is an association that works to mobilise and transform the performing arts sector. Its activities are relatively broad in scope, as they take into account all issues related to the nine planetary boundaries and environmental justice.
The association currently has 450 members (artists, technicians, festivals, companies, venues, unions, local authorities, consultants) and develops advocacy and tools.

The Hexagone project, a national stage in the arts and sciences field, is based on three key areas:
– The relationship between arts and sciences as a conceptual and methodological framework for arts and sciences, with an approach based on the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences
– Digital arts as a sphere of experimentation with tools for creation, mediation and new forms of writing
– The relationship between nature and society as a generalised framework
It is therefore through these three areas that the relationship between arts and sciences will be implemented. This requires a broad interdisciplinary approach.
