Soil Insights: Analysing the current societal and mental landscape of human-soil relations across Europe
Once upon a time, the SOILSCAPE project began with a deep exploration of the relationship between humans and soil, embarking on a journey of discovery through multilingual consultations, literature reviews, and participatory research. In the first phase, the SOILSCAPE team listened to the stories and values of societies, businesses, and citizens to understand how soil is perceived and what creative ways could reconnect people with the earth beneath their feet. Guided by partners across Europe, soil literacy and artistic representations were mapped, uncovering both the barriers and potentials for fostering soil awareness through art. As they ventured further, they explored how art could be a powerful tool to increase soil literacy, identifying global best practices and creating a catalogue of policies and practices that inspire engagement and action. The team also forged strong alliances with EU initiatives and global networks to spread the word about soil’s importance far and wide. By the end of this chapter, the groundwork was laid for a creative and impactful journey ahead, with the lessons of the past guiding their future efforts in soil preservation.
