BioBlitz – Soil Festival 2026

The Fundação de Serralves is promoting the 12th edition of BioBlitz Serralves, the largest awareness-raising event for biodiversity protection held in Portugal.

Aimed at the educational community, families and the general public, BioBlitz has established itself as a leading scientific and educational initiative in the fields of science, environmental education, biodiversity and sustainability.

Over the course of one week in spring, this event invites participants to discover the fauna and flora of the Serralves Park through exploratory methodologies that bring together science, art and culture. Grounded in a contemporary narrative, it is part of the Sustainability Agenda and draws inspiration from the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goal “Protect Life on Land”, promoting active awareness of the importance of preserving ecosystems.

In 2026, BioBlitz will take place in person for the educational community from 20 to 24 April, and will open to families and the general public on 25 and 26 April, offering a unique opportunity to discover and appreciate biodiversity through a diverse and participatory programme.

In this 12th edition, special emphasis will be placed on soil, a key element for the future of the planet. Bringing together science, art and citizen participation, the programme will address topics such as soil biodiversity, erosion, conservation, sustainable agricultural practices and the vital role this resource plays in the health of ecosystems.

In line with the European context of 2026, marked by the implementation of the European Union Soil Monitoring and Resilience Law and by strengthened research under the Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe”, the event will also be part of the Soil Festival, a European initiative promoted by the Soilscape Project. In this context, communities, artists, scientists and citizens are invited to reflect on and act upon the relationship between society and soil, reinforcing the international dimension of BioBlitz and broadening the dialogue between science, art and citizenship.

More than an event, BioBlitz Serralves is an invitation for everyone to take part in building a more sustainable future.
